Dragon's Back runs along the southeastern spine of Hong Kong Island through Shek O Country Park. The name is accurate — from the upper ridge the trail genuinely feels like moving along the back of something large and geological, with the land falling sharply away on both sides. The South China Sea is to the right. The urban spread of Hong Kong Island is to the left. Between them, miles of green that most visitors never suspect exists.

The trail begins at To Tei Wan, reached by bus 9 from Shau Kei Wan MTR, and climbs to Shek O Peak before running south along the exposed ridgeline. The descent toward Shek O village — through lower forest and past the beach — is one of the best trail endings in Hong Kong. The Peak: The Better Orientation Hike

The Peak at 552 metres is the highest point on Hong Kong Island and the most visited location in one of the most visited cities in Asia. Most people who go experience it as a mall with a view — Peak Tower, the Galleria, a viewing terrace, and then back down. The actual trail, the Peak Circle Walk that loops through dense forest around the summit, is what the majority of visitors miss.

The Lugard Road loop is a 3.5km near-flat circuit through subtropical forest, with the harbour visible in multiple directions. At 6am on a winter morning, with the harbour laid out below in clean light and almost no one else on the path, this is one of the finest walks in Hong Kong. It is also where most people's trail culture begins — accessible by tram or bus from Central, impossible to get seriously lost on, and genuinely beautiful. What The Peak does better than Dragon's Back: Accessibility. The view of Victoria Harbour — which Dragon's Back cannot replicate from its south-facing ridge. The ease of combination with a city morning. And the cultural familiarity: standing on the Peak carries a different weight because the Peak is the lens through which Hong Kong has always understood itself from above.


The Honest Verdict: Which to Do First

If you are visiting Hong Kong for a short time and can only do one: Dragon's Back. It is the better hiking experience. The trail is more varied, the views more dramatic, the sense of genuine reward greater. If the weather is clear and you have a full morning, Dragon's Back vs The Peak is not a close comparison as a hike — Dragon's Back wins.

If you have more time, or you are based in Hong Kong: do The Peak first. It is the orientation hike. Standing on Lugard Road Lookout and seeing the city spread below you — harbour, Kowloon, the islands — gives you a mental map that makes every subsequent hike make more sense. Do The Peak on your first week. Do Dragon's Back on your first proper hiking day. Then you will understand immediately why these two recommendations arrive as a pair.
